The Sonnets of William Shakespeare
5W William Shakespeare, London 1881
Notes
William Shakespeare’s sonnets, a collection of 154 poems, are some of the most famous in English literature. Written primarily in iambic pentameter, they explore themes like love, beauty, time, and mortality. The sonnets are divided into two main groups: the first 126 are addressed to a young man, celebrating his beauty and urging him to procreate, while the later sonnets focus on a mysterious “Dark Lady,” exploring a more complex and tumultuous love. They are renowned for their emotional depth, intricate wordplay, and timeless appeal.
