The Star Spangled Banner
5R, 1861 by F.O. Darley
Notes
"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States, written by Francis Scott Key in 1814. Key, a lawyer and poet, penned the lyrics after witnessing the British attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. Inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn, he wrote a poem titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry." This poem was later set to the melody of a popular British tune, "To Anacreon in Heaven." "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the official national anthem of the United States in 1931, symbolizing resilience, patriotism, and freedom.
