This volume marks the historic second installment of Faulkner's acclaimed Snopes Trilogy, sandwiched between The Hamlet (1940) and The Mansion (1959). The story follows the ruthless rise of Flem Snopes and his family as they seize control of the town of Jefferson, Mississippi. Unlike many of Faulkner's other works, this narrative is unique for its collaborative storytelling style. The plot is told through three alternating narrators: Gavin Stevens, V.K. Ratliff, and Charles Mallison, giving readers multiple viewpoints on the town's social decay.
