Notes

First published serially between 1869 and 1870, Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) stands as a towering, visionary masterpiece of global science fiction and adventure literature. Conceived by the prolific French author Jules Verne, the story follows the marine biologist Professor Pierre Aronnax, his loyal servant Conseil, and the volatile Canadian harpooner Ned Land after they are captured by the enigmatic, tragic Captain Nemo. Aboard the futuristic, electrically powered submarine Nautilus, they embark on an extraordinary 50,000-mile undersea voyage through coral kingdoms, hidden ruins, and dangerous deep-sea trenches. Verne utilized the narrative not only to explore the boundless, unmapped mysteries of the natural ocean world but to deliver a profound psychological critique of human civilization, personal liberty, and the corruptive nature of unbridled scientific power.
Among the most elite artifacts in the history of industrial book arts is a spectacular, specially bound publisher's copy of Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers executed by the renowned master Parisian binder Michel Engel. This extraordinary volume originates from the celebrated antiquarian collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin, who spent decades assembling the world’s premier archive of 19th-century French publishers' trade bindings. Printed by Belin frères for Pierre-Jules Hetzel’s legendary Voyages Extraordinaires series, this imperial octavo volume showcases Engel's absolute zenith of technical bookbinding craft. It features a breathtaking, highly complex pictorial cloth cover adorned with intricate gold and silver leaf stamping over rich, vibrant grain fabrics, housing 111 original wood engravings by Hildibrand after drawings by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou.
