Notes

2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh, first published on October 14, 1926. Inspired by his son Christopher Robin and his collection of stuffed animals, Milne brought to life the enchanting world of the Hundred Acre Wood, introducing generations of readers to Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, and their unforgettable companions. Beautifully illustrated by E. H. Shepard, the stories capture the innocence of childhood through gentle humor, enduring friendship, and timeless wisdom. A century after its publication, Winnie-the-Pooh remains one of the most cherished works of children’s literature, its characters and whimsical adventures continuing to delight readers of all ages.

A. A. Milne (1882–1956) was an English author and playwright who drew inspiration for the stories from his young son, Christopher Robin Milne, and his collection of stuffed animals. Although Milne had already achieved success as a writer of plays and essays, it was the Pooh stories that secured his lasting literary reputation. His ability to combine gentle humor with thoughtful reflection on childhood and human nature gave the stories a timeless quality that continues to resonate with readers.

The enduring charm of Winnie-the-Pooh is closely tied to the illustrations of E. H. Shepard, whose delicate line drawings brought Milne’s characters vividly to life. Shepard’s illustrations, based in part on Christopher Robin’s own toys, complement the text with a sense of warmth and simplicity that has become inseparable from the stories themselves. His artwork helped define the visual identity of Pooh and his companions, and remains one of the most recognizable and beloved styles in children’s literature.
