Notes

Yertle the Turtle, written by Dr. Seuss, is a story about a power-hungry turtle king named Yertle. He commands other turtles to stack themselves into a high throne so he can see and rule over more territory. However, the stack becomes unstable as Yertle’s greed grows, and a small, humble turtle named Mack protests. Mack eventually burps, causing the stack to collapse and Yertle to fall into the mud, ending his reign. The story is a humorous yet poignant critique of tyranny and the abuse of power.
